iSimangaliso Wetland Park: Four major successes in anti-poaching efforts

The killing of an iconic rhino family at a well-known wildlife reserve on South Africa's eastern coast is being described as yet another devastating blow in the country's war against rampant poaching.

iSimangaliso winning the war against poaching

Inspired by former President Nelson Mandela, iSimangaliso Authority is implementing an exciting community-wide rhino awareness programme in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The aim of the iSimangaliso My Rhino, Our Future programme is to involve youth in raising awareness for rhinos and their protection in iSimangaliso Wetland Park and South Africa. This exciting initiative allows youth to have a voice in the war against rhino poaching and seeks to create the next generation of wildlife ambassadors.

The site visit was a field trip, taking members of the Committee (by helicopter) to an actual crime scene where members witnessed first-hand the devastation caused by poachers and how the crime scene is secured and investigated by the joint task team, gathering any and all information / data / evidence which will assist in the possible apprehensions of the perpetrators and prevention of any future incidents. On the return, the delegation / members were given a tour of the joint operations center, where the park rangers together with other intelligence and enforcement agencies plan, discuss and execute joint operations in the fight against rhino poaching.

The DEA needs support in shifting the fight against rhino poaching from the current anti-poaching enforcement focus to a point where activities aimed at devaluing the horn, and decreasing the viability of and demand for ivory and rhino horn trade dominate. To this end, the following can be promoted: 2ff7e9595c
